Medic Collective X Unlock Biology Essay Competition

Here at The Medic Collective, we are always finding new opportunities for school students to get stuck into medicine and biology. So, this month we have joined up with Unlock Biology to create a new essay competition! There will be three question titles and three winners, each published on our Medicine Blog, the Unlock Biology website, social media. Winners will receive a certificate.

Deadline: December 1st 13:00pm

Pick one of these three essay titles to discuss

  1. How will humans continue to evolve with time?
  2. What is required to terraform a planet for human habitation?
  3. What will the next pandemic look like? You can answer these questions any way you wish!

Unique articles or takes on a subject are strongly encouraged (don’t copy an existing article or textbook)

You must reference your resources and websites using Vancouver (1) or Harvard style (like this, 2022) referencing. We encourage you to back up your claims with evidence, such as an example, a fact, or a study. Well designed hand-drawn diagrams and photos you have taken are allowed and encouraged (not copy-and-pasted due to copyright laws).

Entry criteria:

  • Word limit: 1000 words maximum (references not included; please include a bibliography).
  • Only students from year 13 and below can apply; all countries welcomed

Submission instructions:

  • Send your submissions to unlockbiologychallenge@gmail.com or themediccollective@gmail.com with the subject title “Essay Competition Submission”
  • Please send it as either: A word document or a google doc (and give us access), not a PDF.
  • Save the document in the name of your article, followed by the question number.
  • Include your name, country, email address, and school year in the document
  • You may also include your school name if you wish.

Each of the three winners will receive a copy of a new e-book on work experience, written by the founder of The Medic Collective, and a problem-solving question pack created by Unlock Biology to give you practice in lateral thinking and an edge in your interviews.

This e-book covers how to effectively organise work experience, reflect on it, and use it in your interviews to answer those tough questions – a recipe for success! Plus, if you are from a widening access background, you can receive the e-book for free! See the description on Amazon for more details.
